The Regeneration of Brighton Seafront

Client: Brighton & Hove City Council

Completion Date: Phased completion 1995 - 2004

This project came about through the Brighton Seafront Strategic Design Initiative the aim of which was to regenerate the seafront through an integrated development plan and strategy.

Fiona Atkinson as in-house Landscape Architect at Brighton Council became closely involved with the design for Phase 1 and worked as the designer on all subsequent phases throughout the life of the development until 2003.

Fiona’s role included production of conceptual designs through to detailed design and production of technical information. She took part in consultation exercises and worked closely with the Quantity Surveyors and contract manager during the construction stage.

The project team also included planners, highways engineers, building surveyors and local artists who were commissioned to design site-specific elements such as timber bollards and seating.

In 2001 Phases 1-5 of the development were awarded the prestigious Civic Trust Landscape Award. The Civic Trust described the scheme as:

…  an ambitious and impressive landscaping scheme that has been extremely successful. The design is bold and full of character and surprise, yet subtle in its detailing and use of materials. All in all, it seems totally appropriate for a city that is unique in its flamboyance and cultural richness.
